Sheng jian bao, or “raw fried buns,” are the heartier cousin to xiao long bao, or soup dumplings. A ball of savory minced pork and broth are encased in a bready shell, then fried to a crisp on the bottom and sprinkled with sesame seeds on the top. They’re common for breakfast on the streets of Shanghai, but can also be sampled at this cute, crowded Mott Street cafe.
